The Basics of Poker

Poker is a card game played around the world. It has a variety of variants and is played in private homes, poker clubs, casinos, and over the Internet.

In poker, players attempt to form the best possible hand from five cards that are dealt face up on the table. The player with the highest ranked hand wins.

There are a number of variations of poker, some of which have more than 10 players.

The game begins with each player putting an amount of money into the pot called an ante before the cards are dealt. The dealer will then deal two cards to each player and they are kept secret from the other players.

Each player then gets a chance to bet, raise, or fold during a betting round (also known as the flop). Once this betting round is complete the dealer deals another card face-up on the board called the turn and again everyone gets a chance to bet or raise.

After the turn a fifth card is revealed that anyone can use and then for the last time, the player with the best hand wins. This is called the Showdown and continues until one player has all of their chips in the pot.
