The position in an offense where a wide receiver lines up on the inside of the formation, behind the running back and tight end. The slot receiver is often considered a team’s secret weapon, as they can give the offense an advantage by having a unique skill set that other wideouts do not possess.
Slot players must be precise with their route running and timing, as well as have good chemistry with the quarterback in order to produce. They also need to be able to block effectively since they will most likely see action on outside run plays, as well as pick up blitzes and provide protection for the running back in the slot.
Lastly, slot receivers must be reliable with great hands and be able to make contested catches. They are normally a little shorter and stockier than your typical wide receiver, and they need to be able to handle contact with ease.
